Tevens werden ze ingezet tijdens de jacht op de otter en de das en het drijven van vee. De Wheaten is één van de vier Ierse terriër rassen en waarschijnlijk de oudste hiervan. Het feit dat hij tenminste 200 jaar bestaat, kan worden afgeleid uit schriftelijke verwijzingen naar ‘honden met een zachte vacht’. In 1937 werd de Wheaten erkend door de Ierse Kennel Club en kreeg de naam Softcoated Wheaten Terriër. Plukken (en scheren) beschadigt de vacht. • De vacht van een Wheaten moet geregeld geknipt worden. • Elke hond verhaart, ook de Wheaten. Het dode haar valt echter niet uit, het moet uit de vacht gekamd worden. Anders gaat dit dode haar klitten vormen. • Geregeld, maar niet te vaak wassen met een goede verzorgende hondenshampoo. • Veeg de baard (na een maaltijd bijvoorbeeld) van een Ierse Wheaten niet dagelijks af met een natte doek, maar met een droge. Hij is slim en houdt van een nieuwe uitdaging. Het liefst is hij bij ‘zijn gezin’ en is dan ook totaal ongeschikt als kennelhond. Bekend staat hij als weinig luidruchtig, maar hij zal zeker van zich laten horen als hij onraad ruikt.
